What is it about?
This is a biography of Larry Ellison, the founder of Oracle and the “playboy” billionaire. Larry manages to somehow fly under the radar, despite being the 2nd richest man in the world (at the time of me writing this). Yet, as Mike explains in this book, Larry’s very large ego wants him to be known.
Larry started Oracle with $1200 and grew it to a multi-billion-dollar company. This book is all about how he did that. It is filled with incredible stories, including a legal case he was caught in with an ex-girlfriend/employee, conversations with Steve Jobs, and a war with Bill Gates.
My favourite parts
I’m a bit of a sucker for stories about Steve Jobs. Steve and Larry deeply admired each other, and reading about some of their interactions was awesome.
You’ve also got to have an appreciation for those who tried to take on Bill Gates. Bill is known to be ruthless and relentless. Anyone who stepped up to him and lived to tell the day is nothing short of impressive.
Oddly enough, I also related to Larry in a lot of ways. So, reading about his numerous flaws and personality quirks was enjoyable.
Who should read it?
Those who are interested in learning about one of the greatest and most interesting founders would find this book great.
Additional thoughts
I’ll be diving deep into learning more about Larry Ellison after this book. He’s extremely fascinating.
Thanks for reading.
