What is it about?
This book is the story of Walmart from the mind of the founder, Sam Walton. He talks about his life growing up, his experience working prior to Walmart, and the entire journey of building Walmart.
Throughout the book, he gives timeless advice that has worked for Walmart, including great principles and practices. You’ll hear about what worked and what didn’t work (there’s a lot of both!).
My favourite parts
As I was reading the book, I could tell what Sam Walton would sound like if he were talking to me. It felt like he was instructing me directly, and that was awesome.
He listed rules to live by when operating your business, which I thought were great. It was also awesome to hear about all the random stuff that he tried.
Who should read it?
Any operator would find great value in this book. Sam is essentially an operating genius (clearly with what he turned Walmart into). With that being said, any entrepreneur would love this one.
Additional thoughts
This was one of the best biographies I’ve ever read. Although some of it didn’t apply to me yet (the extreme growth aspect), I found a lot of value in the first half of the book.
At the least, it is a great story of a company that has impacted us all.
