What is it about?
Elizabeth writes about the nature of creativity and how to embrace it in everyday life. She emphasizes the idea of “big magic” as an almost mystical force that exists within it. There is a moment when “big magic” takes over, and we should try to make way for these moments to happen.
She also talks a lot about overcoming fear because it’ll block creativity. We need to find a way to get started on whatever it is we want to create. Self-doubt and perfectionism are major fears that will get in the way.
My favourite parts
I like it when Elizabeth talks about the ingredients for creativity.
Courage
Enchantment
Permission
Persistence
Trust
Knowing this does not make it easy, but it does mean creative living is always possible.
She also spoke to me when she started talking about Marcus Aurelius. “Give your mind a job to do, or else it will find a job to do, and you might not like the job it invents.” Quite often, the job it will do destroys your peace of mind.
Who should read it?
This book is definitely geared towards the creatives out there who are not creating to their full potential! (most of you)
Additional thoughts
While I didn’t learn many unique things reading this book, I did find some inspiration to create more than I already am. To me, that makes this book worth reading.
