What is it about?
This book is essentially an autobiography by Jet Li. I say essentially because it has a bit of a twist. Throughout the book, he approaches life’s dilemmas from either a Taoist or Buddhist perspective. In this way, it also feels like a spiritual book.
My favourite parts
I very much enjoyed seeing how Jet Li looked at issues that arose. He understood the dualities of life because of Taoism, but was still constantly humbled. It showed that you never really know it all and must always remind a student.
Later in Jet’s life, he rekindles the relationship with his two oldest daughters. It’s interesting because you would think that someone as spiritual and aware as Jet Li would manage family relationships well. Everyone faces issues. Even someone like him.
Who should read it?
If you love Jet Li like I do, you will enjoy this book. But if you are also curious about how to approach life with a Taoist or Buddhist lens, this book is incredible for that.
Additional thoughts
While reading this book, it made me reflect on a few things in my own life. Specifically, how important relationships with family are, how to use Taoism or Buddhism to navigate life’s issues, and how little I know in general. It felt like a humbling book to read, and I believe that makes it very valuable.
